Springtime Music Fun

Spring is the perfect time to enjoy the beautiful weather with the family, and what better way than by making music and sharing time together. Be creative; you can make musical instruments, such as drums out of your old pots and pans. A fun musical experience can include making homemade shakers, right out of materials you have in your kitchen.

Materials Instructions
  1. Plastic eggs or two paper plates
  2. Filling - rice and barley are recommended, but you can also fill different eggs or plates with different foods, such as pasta
  3. Tape or staples
Put a couple of tablespoons of rice or other filling in the egg or one half of the paper plate. Put the egg or plate together and place tape along the edge. With the paper plate you can also staple it together around the edges.

Suggestions:
Get together and see all of the wonderful opportunities that will possibly come out of this experience, the excitement, the back-and-forth communication and shared engagement.

  • Make shakers with different fillings and have the children compare sounds.
  • Be creative and silly, watch your child laugh when you put the egg on your head.
  • Play a game by placing a basket a few feet in front of you and your child and toss the eggs in.
  • You can play a game of catch and watch for when your child sustains eye contact with you.
  • Shake the shakers and sing together, while one person keeps a steady beat on the drum/pots and pans.
  • Then add some movement, look for how your child imitates you.

Itsy Bitsy Spider

Suggestions:
  • Replace "spider" with other animals/insects (i.e. caterpillar, butterfly, etc.) or people (i.e. child's name, your name, etc.)
  • Make it "The big, big, spider" and change your voice to make it lower in pitch and slower in tempo
  • Instead of climbing up the water spout, replace the lyrics with going through the jungle, the forest, or up the child's leg
  • Try creating your own lyrics in the moment! Be creative and have fun!

The Very Busy Spider

Suggestions:
  • Replace "horse" with other animals (cow, dog, cat, etc.)
  • Change "she" to "he" or child's name
  • Put your arms in front of you, make two fists and spin arms in a small circle
  • Add large body movement by having the child spin in a circle

Zoo

Suggestions:
  • Replace Elephant with Crocodile, monkey, lion, etc.
  • Replace the action (i.e. "swinging" and "ewing and awing") with new ones such as growling, stomping, etc.
  • Add some emotions: We're so excited to be going to the zoo" or "We're so tired after being at the zoo"

Teasing Mr. Crocodile

Suggestions:
  • Replace monkey's with a different animal (i.e. bird's, snakes, etc)
  • Use fingers or toys to count how many monkeys are left after each verse
  • Someone can be the monkey "swinging in the tree...teasing Mr. Crocodile" by adding movement and play while someone else can be the Mr. Crocodile trying to get the monkeys

  • Make a beehive out of a blanket and pretend to be a bee hiding underneath, then wait for the count of 5, jump out and fly around

Suggestions:
  • Replace "doggie" with "kitty", "fish" or any other animal
  • Add different animal noises (i.e. "meow" for the kitty or kissing noises for the fish) or experiment with making up your own silly sounds for each animal

Suggestions:
  • Try using different animals and animal sounds, for example, instead of "ducks" use "cows"...mother cow said "Moo, moo, moo, moo", etc.

Suggestions:
  • Sing: "Old MacDonald had a band" and add the names and sounds of instruments, for example, "And in his band he had a drum, E-I-E-I-O, with a boom, boom here and a boom, boom there"
  • Pretend to be the animals on the farm, get down on the ground and move and make sounds like the animals. Have the child guess what animal you are.

  • This song can be used for feeding time, for example, "this is the way we eat our food" or "this is the way we drink our water."
  • You can also use this song when introducing a novel activity or idea in your session using this song to help explain how to complete it together, for example, when playing with a new, more complicated puzzle sing "This is the way we make the puzzle..."

Suggestions:
  •  For small children place them on your lap with your legs stretched out in front of you, as the men march up, bend your knees up and as they go down, stretch your legs out in front of you again. During "Oh, a-hunting we will go" you can hold the child and have them gently fall to the ground.
  • Use a blanket or parachute and have the child lay down on the blanket, have two adults hold the blanket and lift the child in the blanket up in the air as "he marched them up" and back down to the ground on "Marched them down again"
  • Make a circle holding hands and during the first verse stand "up" and then "down". For the second verse march in a circle to the "left" and to the "right". During the last verse, on "Oh, a-hunting we will go", you can "catch" someone from the group in the middle of the circle.

My Bonnie

Suggestions:
  • Put the child in your lap and sway side-to-side during "My Bonnie lies over the ocean. During "bring back, bring back" move back-and-forth, by leaning forward then back.
  • While the child is laying in a bean bag, rock them side to side like they are swaying on a boat
  • Use a blanket or parachute and have the child lay down on the blanket, have two adults hold the blanket and lift the child in the blanket up in the air and sway back-and-forth
  • With two or more people, hold hands and sway arms back and forth. During "Bring back..." move into the center and back out.
  • Replace "My Bonnie" with the child's name.

Little Red Wagon

Suggestions:
  • For small children place them on your lap with your legs stretched out in front of you and move your legs up and down during "Bumpin' up and down." During "One wheel's off and the axel's broken" move the child from side-to-side over your legs.
  • Begin by forming a circle. During the "Bumpin" verse, jump up and down with two legs, then switch to jumping up and down on one leg during the "One wheel's off" verse. During the last verse "Let's get a hammer," make a large movement like you are swinging a large sledge hammer over your shoulder toward the ground.

Suggestions:
  • Other possible movements include: hop, sway, stretch, dance, skate, clap and stomp
  • Make a circle by holding hands and sing "Circle, circle, circle to my Lou"
  • Add some of the child's senses to the experience "Hi Jackie, I see you" or "Hi Jackie, I hear you"
  • Add body awareness by replacing lyrics with, "Hi arms, I feel you" while squeezing arms. Other possible body parts include: head, legs, back, shoulders, etc.

Suggestions:
  • As you say the chant, hold hands and walk in a circle. Everyone falls down on the words "We all fall down." Ask the children what their legs do when they fall down.
  • During "Thunder, lightening" pat a fast rhythm, with your hands, on the ground to imitate thunder.
  • During "Picking up the daisy's" pretend to pull up daisy's from the floor
  • Pretend to smell them with your nose, utilizing the sign for flower

Three Little Birds

Suggestions:
  • Add simple movements by swaying together during the chorus
  • Use simple signs (i.e. birds, sun, singing) or adapted signs such as raising arms above head to form a "sun" or during the line "this is my message to you" try having everyone point to themselves ("my message") and then to a peer ("to you")
  • Use the concept of moving in "slow motion" to the rhythm of the song
  • Ask child about their "morning routine." Find out what they do when they "Rise up" each morning and add those movements, for example, stretching or yawning, etc.
